Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that the majority party in the House passed legislation tonight to mandate comprehensive sex education for all students, K-12.

I talked about this bill in my last email update to you. Senate Bill 5395 has generated massive opposition from parents, teachers and school officials from around the state. In addition, my office has received over 900 emails opposing this legislation and only three emails in support. This legislation is being pushed by Chris Reykdal, Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

I sincerely believe that decisions like this are best left to parents with input from local communities, teachers and school personnel. Unfortunately, the majority party does not agree. There will now be “age appropriate” sex education for all grades, including young elementary students. But who deems it “age appropriate”? Bureaucrats in Olympia with input from those with an agenda, NOT local parents and teachers. This is a sad day for our state.

I want you to know that I and my House Republican colleagues fought against this bill for over six hours tonight. We had over 200 amendments prepared to address citizen concerns. However, House Democrats only allowed 15 of our amendments to be heard. They voted them all down and the bill passed with NO Republican support.

I am sorry this bill passed. I am sorry that common sense lost out to bureaucratic agendas. I am sorry that our state is taking this direction on an issue such as this. In the end, the other side has the votes to pass a horrible bill like this; we don't have the votes to stop it.
